Choosing Windows for Your Home: Vinyl or Fiberglass?

If it’s time to start replacing the windows of your Kansas City home, there are many options available to you. Here at Bordner, we install doors and windows made from wood, aluminum, composite, vinyl, fiberglass, and other materials. The many different options may seem daunting, but we are happy to provide all the information and advice you need to make the choice that is best for your home, budget, and lifestyle.

Two of the most popular window choices these days are vinyl and fiberglass, each of which has its own set of advantages. Read on for a brief explanation of each type of windows.

As knowledge about environmental issues grows and energy prices rise, many homeowners are choosing energy efficient windows. Fiberglass windows are a great choice because they are not only energy efficient, but are also quite attractive. After extensive review, we have chosen to carry the Infinity from Marvin line of windows and patio doors.

These products are low maintenance, crack and leak resistant, highly efficient (meeting the ENERGY STAR guidelines), long-lasting (carry 20 year glass and Limited Lifetime parts warranties from Infinity), are 39% more energy efficient to produce, and to top it all off, they look great, with many design, color, and hardware options to fit the style of your home. Bordner is the only licensed Infinity window installer in the Kansas City area, so give us a call today.

Kansas City sees a wide range of weather, from frigid winters to hot, humid summers, and those temperature and humidity changes can make home maintenance a challenge- not to mention the energy bills! Fortunately, vinyl windows are a great economical solution. They are very low-maintenance, and can also improve your home’s energy efficiency. Between the outstanding insulation value and low maintenance requirements (vinyl windows don’t need painting and will not rot), vinyl is an increasingly popular choice for increasing the value of your home.

At Bordner, we have chosen to carry Vinylmax windows and doors, which are manufactured in the USA using high-quality PVC vinyl. Contact us today to learn more about these products, including double-hung windows, sliding windows, casement windows, bay windows, and patio doors.

Hiring a Contractor You Can Trust

It’s unfortunate, but many homeowners have had less-than-positive experiences with home repair contractors. Those experiences make it understandably nerve-wracking to hire a contractor in the future. But for homeowners who have been burned before, you’ll be glad to know that here at Bordner, integrity and customer service are our very highest priority.

We deliver excellent services to our clients by sticking to our 11-step customer service pledge, always striving to restore people’s faith in contractors, one job at a time. Take a look at the main components of our pledge, below.

  • We make sure all of our employees are given the training and education necessary to perform their jobs with excellence.
  • We understand the importance of truly understanding our clients’ home improvement goals, and consequently, all of our sales and consulting associates are trained to be good listeners.
  • We evaluate the job site extensively to ensure a quality outcome.
  • Because components like roofs and windows don’t require replacement very often, it can be stressful trying to make the right decision. We pride ourselves on providing education and information to our clients, allowing you to make an informed decision you can feel comfortable with.
  • In order to deliver the highest quality result to our customers we have an additional level of accountability beyond the normal foreman and installation crew- a staff supervisor. These specially trained, salaried staff members are responsible for overseeing the work of the installation crew and making sure your home improvement project lives up to our high standards.
  • We further ensure outstanding work by employing quality control inspectors, who visit the job site at completion to make sure the work meets our quality control checklist.
  • Because risk is always present on construction sites, we maintain insurance coverage above the basic requirements, extending to “completed operations” coverage.
  • Our contracts are easily understood, specific to your home, and very thorough. Upon your full payment for our home repair services, your contract doubles as a full five-year warranty.
  • While many home improvement contractors go out of business each year, Bordner has been serving Kansas City homeowners since 1987.
  • How have we stuck around so long when other home repair contractors have come and gone? Well, we place a high importance on building relationships between our staff, installation teams, suppliers, and most importantly, our customers. Our goal is to do work that makes you want to call Bordner whenever you have a home repair need.
  • If there is a problem with your installation or you are otherwise unhappy with the service you receive, we will make it right- that’s just how we do business.

From stone, stucco, and siding to doors, windows, and roofs, we do it all. Contact us today for help with any repair or improvement projects to your Kansas City home.

April 3rd 2011 Hailstorm Anniversary

It’s been one year since a hailstorm ravaged parts of the Kansas city Metro area.  If you live in one of the areas hit by hail, make sure you’ve had your roof inspected by a reputable contractor.  Some insurance companies have a deadline on filing a claim, and you wouldn’t want to forego the opportunity to replace your roof if it has been damaged.  Quite often, the damage from a storm can go unnoticed until it has wreaked unseen havoc on your home.  If you would like a Bordner representative to check your home for hail damage, call us today. Even if you don’t get a new roof, you’ll still get peace of mind.

Upgrade Your Home with Design Details

Upgrade Your HomeCould your home use a bit of a makeover? Enhance the curb appeal of your home and make a great impression on neighbors, guests, and even potential buyers by embarking on one or more of these home improvement projects recommended by Better Homes & Gardens.

Windows– Your windows should complement the architectural style of your home. You can also conserve energy and save money by investing in energy efficient windows. At Bordner, we can install the perfect high-quality windows and doors for your home.

Porch Columns– Porch columns are a very important part of the overall look of your home. Especially for Craftsman style homes, it’s important that the columns are scaled properly to the house. If your home could use some help in the porch post department, consider adding cultured stone veneers for a sturdier look. Another alternative for smaller budgets is to surround the existing small posts with cedar planking to create a more appropriately-sized column.

Roof– Most people think a lot about the exterior features of their home- the landscaping, paint or siding, windows and doors, etc.- but the roof is always ignored! We can create a variety of beautiful roofs with materials ranging from the classic asphalt shingle to wood shakes, and even clay, slate, or concrete tiles!

Siding– Updating the siding on your home can instantly make everything look fresher! We install vinyl and fiber cement siding, so call us today to learn more about our products and services.

Eaton Before and After

It was a pleasure to work with the Eaton’s on their reroof. They originally had a wood roof, but decided to go back with the Certainteed Presidential TL IR. This is one of the thickest roofs available and can stand up to more extreme weather such as hail. As an added bonus, most insurance companies give discounts for Class 4 impact resistant roofs like this one.

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

You may be doing some spring cleaning around your Kansas City home, but don’t forget about spring maintenance! Your home is one of your biggest assets and you want to keep it in great condition, whether you plan to live there for years or need to sell in the near future.

Check out the spring home maintenance checklist fromConsumer Reports to help you stay on top of it all.

  • Deck- Look for water damage and wood decay that could impact the structure of the porch.
  • Air Conditioner- Your air conditioner will perform better and save you money on power bills if you keep it clean. Check it yearly to keep things running smoothly.
  • Foundation- Check foundation for cracks or fissures, and ensure ground around it is clear of leaves or other debris.
  • Gutters- It’s important not only to make sure your gutters are free from debris, but also that they are adequately attached to your home. Look for corroded fasteners and other warning signs. Also importantly, make sure your downspouts are pointing away from your home and that water can flow away from your foundation instead of pooling there, which an cause damage.
  • Roof- Inspect your attic for water stains, as well as the siding under the eaves, the ceilings of your home, etc. Contact us for a free roof analysis today!
  • Surrounding trees- Inspect trees for broken branches and disease, or have an arborist come to your home. It’s better to pay for maintenance to your trees to prevent accidents, rather than clean up the mess after a branch falls on your car or home!
  • Pavement- The longer cracks go unchecked, the harder it will be to repair them. You can get crack patching kits at home improvement stores.

Is Stucco Right for Your Kansas City Home?

StuccoHome maintenance and improvement decisions can be nerve-wracking- after all, your home is probably your greatest investment! Fortunately, having a trustworthy home improvement expert at your side will decrease the stress, so you can feel confident that you are making the right choices for your Kansas City home.

At Bordner, we offer a number of home improvement services, including stucco. This classic home finishing material has been around for hundreds of years, and consists of multiple types of cement mixed with sand, water, and fiberglass fibers. That mixture comes together to create a durable, high-quality result that is impact and fire resistant, in addition to being impervious to both termites and rot. And whereas other home finishes lose their luster over time, conventional stucco actually grows harder and more durable as time progresses.

This type of exterior is almost maintenance free, making it a very popular choice for Kansas City homeowners. Could stucco work for your home? Contact our Kansas City home improvement company today to schedule a free consultation with one of our stucco experts, and find out if stucco is the right re-siding choice for you.
